Interactive museum of "Embamunaigas"

Interactive museum of EmbaMunaiGas and Kazakhstan's oil industry

ONE OF THE MOST INNOVATIVE AND TECHNOLOGICAL MUSEUMS IN KAZAKHSTAN AND CIS

We are used to seeing the concept of a museum as something static, frozen in time. For many people such format seems to be boring and uninteresting. However, with the help of technologies, we can change the perception of museums, by making them dynamic and truly interesting. The main component of such transformation is the feedback to a visitor using interactive technologies. It is the possibility of interaction with the exhibits and expositions that makes a visit to the museum unforgettable. Another important component is the dynamic. Technological base will allow to change and add museum content, thereby maintaining relevance and novelty, and most importantly – the motivation to visit it again.

The history of Embamunaigas company can be traced back more than 100 years. It is one of the oldest companies in the country.

A large volume of information like that, could not be presented physically in a relatively small room of the museum.

In 2014, JSC “Embamunaigas” completed the construction of the new headquarters of the company. That is why it was decided to create a technological and modern museum within such a large-scale renovation.

360 DEGREE PROJECTION

The first area, which the visitor can see, is the Intro zone. It tells us about the origin of oil and its role in the formation of modern Kazakhstan. The zone is made in the form of a dome with a spherical projection. It is one of the most technically difficult parts of the project. We have tried many solutions in order to achieve a true 360 degree projection. Creation of the video clip for this zone required a deep attention to detail, not only in the centre of the frame, but also in all other parts of it. Due to the inclusion of peripheral vision, a unique effect of immersion is created in this area.

INTERACTIVE PROJECTION AND

KINETIC INSTALLATION

Super colourful and interactive projections of high resolution are the technological foundation of the museum and allow to bring walls and other surfaces to life. Interaction with the projections happens through touch and gestures. The uniqueness of this project is in the scale of sensor surfaces. Ready-made solutions in the form of touch foils and infrared frames are not suitable for large curved walls. We have therefore developed our own optical touch tracking technology, which doesn’t have analogues in the world.

In addition to the projections, museum utilises kinetic installations in the form of models of drilling and pumping units. The visitor can control them via sensor panels. There is an installation in the middle of the museum, which is forming three-dimensional shapes from the array of black drops. This installation was fully created by us, from the idea to the full realisation, including almost all of the details, which we planned and created using 3D printers.

VIRTUAL REALITY

One of the most interesting areas of the museum is the hall of virtual reality. Here, the visitors can immerse themselves in the simulation connected to the past of the company and the region in general, as well as learn the principle of operation of the oil industry after playing a mini game.

It is very rare for a museum to not have an audio guide. We have decided to improve the concept using technologies of augmented reality, which allowed us to show visualisation of various objects and equipment, connected to the history, told by the audio guide to the visitor.

We would like to show a pre-production presentation of the museum:

And a short teaser afer the launch:
